Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition (meaning it is based on how the brain develops when we are young) that is estimated to affect about 5% of children and 2.5% of adults. While some people are diagnosed as children, a large number of people struggle with this condition throughout their lives without realizing it.

Childhood Onset

You may not have been diagnosed as a child, but there will have been some signs that these concerns started before age 12.

Some people have mainly attention/concentration symptoms, some have mainly hyperactivity symptoms, and some have both.

The right treatment can help

Assessment is often the first step

If you seem to experience some of the challenges listed above, the first step is often an assessment to find out if you have ADHD. A comprehensive assessment will measure different aspects of your cognitive ability, personality and mental health traits, and symptoms presentations to determine if this neurodevelopmental condition is affecting you. This is an important step because many of these symptoms can have other causes or are experienced to some degree by many people without ADHD.

Once you have a diagnosis you can have a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This might include practical strategies that work for you or therapy to figure out how to best use your strengths. Additionally, an assessment and diagnosis may be required to apply for school or work accommodations, disability benefits, or the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
